Distinctive residences and affluent neighborhoods are the hallmarks of McLean VA real estate. The well-to-do community is just eight miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and draws many powerful residents, including Supreme Court justices, CEOs, Congressional representatives and diplomats. Home to Central Intelligence Agency headquarters, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and several Fortune 500 companies, McLean embodies a panache rarely seen in other cities.

History

Blessed with prime land on the Potomac River’s west bank, McLean properties were inhabited by several Native American tribes in pre-colonial times. As colonialism progressed, several notable McLean VA homes were built, including the legendary Salona homestead. Home to Revolutionary War hero Light-Horse Harry Lee, Salona sheltered Dolly Madison in 1814 as British troops burned the White House. Originally, the area encompassed the towns of Langley and Lewinsville, both critical to the Civil War’s Confederate and Union armies. The region continued to grow following the war and was eventually connected to Washington, D.C. in 1906 with the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railway. Langley and Lewinsville merged in 1910, forming the town named for John Roll Mclean, the railroad’s co-founder and former publisher/owner of The Washington Post. As the entire region prospered, McLean burgeoned, doubling its population from 1970 to 1980 and developing into the upscale enclave it is today.

Parks

McLean homes are surrounded by welcoming neighborhood parks. Clemyjontri Park is one of the city’s most treasured spots, featuring inventive play structures that are accessible to children of all abilities. Four colorful play zones surround an ornate carousel and the park’s remarkable Liberty Swing enables wheelchair-bound children to swing safely in their own wheelchairs.
